Look for Wildlife and Birds
Bontebok are the park’s signature animals and may be seen grazing in open areas. Other wildlife includes red hartebeest and Cape mountain zebra. Sightings depend on conditions, so drive slowly and observe the surrounding vegetation.
Birdwatching is another rewarding activity, with various species found around grassland, shrubs, and river habitats. Binoculars can help visitors identify birds without disturbing them. Maintain a respectful distance from wildlife, never feed animals, and remain within designated visitor areas.
Enjoy Hiking and Scenic Drives
The park has traditionally offered several walking trails. The Acacia Trail is approximately 1.6 kilometres long, the Blue Crane Trail around 3.2 kilometres, and the Aloe Hill Trail approximately 3.3 kilometres. The Bushbuck Trail covers about 5.4 kilometres. These routes provide opportunities to appreciate native plants, birdlife, and views of the river and mountains.
When to Visit
The park can be visited throughout the year, although weather conditions affect outdoor activities. Warmer months are suitable for exploring, while cooler periods may provide comfortable walking conditions. Rain can make gravel roads slippery and restrict access to river areas.
Early morning and late afternoon are good times for wildlife viewing, with softer light for photography. Check the forecast and park announcements before departure, especially after heavy rainfall.
